Professor "Cap" Heinecke's Rules on Leadership
Throughout this journey in the GSE, we have discussed what it is to be a leader, and have pushed ourselves to take risks in taking on leadership roles. Just recently, a great leader that touched thousands of lives around the world passed away. For eight summers I had the incredible opportunity to work overseas with Camp Adventure and Captain Walt Heinecke. Each summer provided wonderful opportunities to work with new people, create high quality programs for kids, and to see the world. When trouble arose, Walt was always a great person to turn to, and he had his own ideas about leadership. May Walt's spirit live on as his rules on leadership continue to spread.
Professor "Cap" Heinecke's Rules on Leadership
1. It isn't as bad as you think. It will look better in the morning.
2. Get mad, then get over it.
3. Avoid having your ego so close to your position that, when your position falls, your ego goes with it.
4. It can be done.
5. Be careful what you choose, you might get it.
6. Don't let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision.
7. You can't make someone else's choices. You shouldn't let someone else make yours.
8. Check the small things.
9. Share credit.
10. Remain calm. Be kind.
11. Have a vision. Be demanding.
12. Don't take counsel of your fears or naysayers.
13. Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.
14. Above all keep "money in the bank."
Onward and upward!
